When we first moved to Lawrence, KS (where we live now), while my wife was doing student teaching, we spent 6 months living on savings as I started a brand new business in the city by selling hundreds of thousands of dollars in ads in my magazine. We received our first paycheck at the same time we were just about to exhaust our savings. It was an exciting adventure of learning and hard work.
For the next year and a half, I created high quality social magazines, differentiated from the highly saturated market of other publications in the city. I produced one per month for a country club neighborhood known as “Alvamar”. Each month’s publications were full of photos as well as interviews with the residents, feature stories on their interests, hobbies, passions, homes, kids, pets, and son on.
Many articles were written by the residents and many I wrote myself. I also hired a few “neighborhood writers”. The average publication was 36 pages.
In addition, we hosted monthly social engagements and events in the neighborhood and at local businesses such as restaurants and event venues. We cooperated with local businesses for trades and publicity on most of these events.
To pay for the publication I single handedly sold advertising and sponsorships to local businesses, and I managed the thirty-plus sponsors per month, coordinating and planning their advertising, consulting on campaigns, instructing or relaying their design work, handling billing, collections and more.
For the first six months I handled all journalism, such as interviews, copywriting, and much of the photography. I partnered with a photographer after three months and then continued to split work with contract workers after six months.
After a year and a half of hard work, fun, and experience running a debt free and profitable business and small staff, I exited the business and community in order to pursue other opportunities.
