“Can I be a christian and have piercings?” What’s your answer if asked? Is it sinful? Should you have them? Is it beneficial? Are you more like Christ if you don’t have them? Are they a sign of your maturity?
These are all questions I’ve dealt with in my few years in ministry, and I’ve heard many more objections… especially since I have two lip piercings.
I have piercings – yes, multiple. In my case, they all reside in the facial region and none of them are on my ears. I also don’t believe I’m a heathen or that they’re a sign of my spiritual immaturity. So yep, I’ve got some explaining to do…
Given my views, I’m quite surprised I have never written on this before. Yet, since I’m currently serving as an interim pastor of a local church, this has recently become an issue again in my personal ministry, and I think it would be beneficial to flush this out a bit.
I know many well-intentioned, Jesus loving, God honoring people have concerns here. Yet many just also have incorrect theology on this. So let’s think well together here, because I realize some opinions may differ, but I believe in my context I’ve found this to be an issue more closely related to the heart of the gospel than most people realize.
What To Expect In This Series
So where do we begin? Like I clearly said in the post title, my goal is to explain “why christians with piercings are not sinful (usually). My challenge here is I must be completely thorough, yet as concise as possible so that you still read this. So here’s what you can expect:
- The typical objections to Christians having piercings.
- The reasons for the law. Thus, why God was against it at one point.
- The reasons we have freedom, or maybe don’t.
- A few kind responses and a few valid objections.
- Some good reasons for having piercings.
- What this means for you if you’re a leader, or if you’re leader has piercings.
I’ll divide this up into a series of three posts since this will be a little lengthy.
THE THREE PARTS OF THIS SERIES
Part 1 – The Top 10 Common Objections Against Christians With Piercings | Here’s so you know, I know what you’re thinking already.
Part 2 – Thinking Through The Purposes Of The Law, Freedom, And “Can I?” Question | We must understand the law if we’re going to understand the freedom.
Part 3 – Conclusions, Warnings, and Implications Of Our Freedom In Christ | A bit on what this all means if you still hold to “no piercings”, if you’re upset about those who do or don’t, and what our responses should be as leaders, followers, and ministers.
